Program Description

Craven’s Health Information Technology students will obtain a skill set incorporating clinical, information technology, leadership, and management skills.  According to the AHIMA career website, “Health information professionals use their knowledge of information technology and records management to form the link between clinicians, administrators, technology designers, and information technology professionals. Health information programs incorporate the disciplines of medicine, management, finance, information technology, and law into one curriculum. Because of this unique mixture, health information graduates can choose from a variety of work settings across an array of healthcare environments.”

Accreditation Information

The HIT program is in Candidacy Status, pending accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Once the program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), graduates of this program meet the education requirements to take the RHIT Certification Exam.

Job Opportunities

The growing use of electronic health records (EHR) will continue to expand and change the job responsibilities of health information professionals. Utilization of EHRs will necessitate the knowledge of EHR computer software and security.  Health Information professionals will use data obtained from the EHR for healthcare improvement efforts. There are approximately 12,000 to 50,000 new jobs anticipated by 2017, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics cites medical records and health information technicians as one of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the US.
